Metal Table Makeover

After my last metal chair makeover, I mentioned to hubby that I'd love to find a metal table. He replies, Like the one I have in the garage?

We pull out a table we had years ago that was lost in the garage and I forgot about it.

Last year I purchased the white bench you'll see and still need to repaint it but that's for later.

Here is my 1970's, 3' round steel table.

Very rusty and luckily not pitted.

I used a wire brush to get off the loose paint and inbetween the legs is very difficult. Instead of being solid they are like a u shape and collects debris and water.

Working on the sides first to see what kind of metal this was, steel, I could then pick the right paint.

Starting out with hand held sand block I quickly discovered this was a electrical tool job.

The paint was really hard to come off by hand.

Out came the Power tool an orbital

sander.

I used about 8 pads with course grit to clean the paint off.

All naked and ready to be painted. I made sure to use a tak cloth to get all debris off for a clean job.

I choose red Krylon paint 1 large can and 1 can of clear coat to protect it.

I forgot to wear gloves and really need to buy one of those spray can button depresses instead of my finger cramping up.

I love this little table. It is so versatile and steady. It's adorable and portable from fire pit to deck.

There was one dent on the side that I pounded out with a stick and a hammer. It looks perfect now.

I redrilled holes in the bottom of the leg that sits on the ground to drain.

There was a hole from the manufacturer but rust made it closed. I reopened the hole and cleaned it up.

I have metal chairs that are similar.
1. I was thinking of striopoping completely not just using a wire brush. Do you think that stripping it down coplketly is a waste of time and effort? The current state the paint is very thick with many layers. 2. Is the clear coat required if the paint is all weather?
