Give your dog a bath as often as your vet recommends and brush him everyday.

for a large dog a tablespoon of olive oil helps a little.. But still sheds. Brush and bath often

  • There are supplements you can give your dog (s), but nothing beats a good brushing! Here are some more tips!

I have several dogs myself, and they all get brushed every day along with the cats.

Oh, Jackie, I wish there was something beyond the basic brush daily routine. I looked at PetSmart and Chewy.com. Their offerings are basic vitamins with a little extra zinc or lanolaic acid for healthy skin. Chewy even offers a stretchy leotard to put on your dog when you don't want it to shed (when you visit someone with allergies, or someone with a strong dislike of vacuuming after every time you visit, I presume.)

I'm going to be watching for a better answer from another Hometalker, because I have 3 dogs, 1 cat, and a pet-owner's special Roomba that all need regular attention for de-hairing. Wish us both luck!

As a former dog handler/trainer, and still rescuing abused dogs.... here are my best 2 ways to deal with shedding. 1) the right brush - if you have a breed that has a thick undercoat get a Furminator. I get them to lay on the ground outside and brush away to get at that thick undercoat which sheds like crazy. Learn good brushing technique - most people just try to drag the brush through the thick fur. Instead grab a thin line of fur as you go picking up more with each stroke moving through the fur - this gets down to the skin and distributes the oils through the fur. Dog breeds with very little short fur like a Doberman or Pit Bull, use a softer natural bristle brush to remove the loose stuff and distribute the oils. If the hair is long on some breeds areas, use a metal comb.

2nd trick is Peanut Butter. A tablespoon a day, dogs love it, it will bring back the shine in any dogs' coat. I learned this from a Irish Setter handler I knew whose dogs always had the shinest coats in the ring. I have restored so many abused, starved dogs to gleaming health with a tablespoon of peanut butter a day - everyone always wants to know how I did it.

Lastly for floor maintenance, a swiffer with an electrostatic cloth on it will grab the extra hair quickly.

good brushings removes dead/shedding hair and distributes the oils in the skin; short haired breeds should be brushed with a 'hound' glove several times a week ... longer coated dogs a good pin brush and comb, again several times a week; and feed a quality food ... take a look at https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com to learn about what is in the brand you are feeding now. -- feed at least a 4-5 grade product.
