I'm not a professional but here are my two cents... If it's a small room, the wood will make it seem smaller so maybe just limited amounts of wood. I'd maybe paint the room a light color and use wood planks or panelling on one wall and use black accessories and (perhaps) fixtures. I think a gray wood would look excellent with the black. Post some before and after pics!! I'd love to see what you came up with!

I agree with Beth, doing all the walls wpuld make it feel smaller. A great place for free wood is pallets. There are many for free listed on Craig's list. The board aren't even in thickness, but it adds character. Maybe do a white or grey wash by mixing paint and water in equal parts then rubbing it on the wood with a dry brush or a rag. If using pallet wood you will need to sand it down with a med then fine sandpaper. A cheap way for the fixtures: pick up some fixtures at the Reuse store, remove the glass, lightly sand and paint with an oil rubbed bronze spray paint. That will make ugly colored fixtures look amazing. Oil rubbed bronze is a super dark brownish black, more natural and expensive looking than straight black. Best of luck! Please post before and aftet pics when you're done.

I am renovating my 1/2 bath after I redecorated 15 yrs ago. I loved it, but it needs all new fixtures (something about a 60s turquoise toilet just doesn't set the right mood?). I had painted all the half walls above the tile & the ceiling in a dk med greyish forest green. It's surprising how big & tall the room looked. Take a chance on what you like; it may surprise you.

I would keep the walls light in color , white if using brown wood , white or light grey if using gray or distressed wood. Then use wood and black metal for fixtures and accents. Make towel bars from black pipe. Shelves use black pipe as braces for wood shelves. ( i did this for a wall pantry in my kitchen , screw 2 flanges to the wall , screw in the pipes and screw on end caps , then place a board on top ! ) good luck !

An accent wall of pallet wood (say behind the vanity or the toilet... and possibly across the ceiling.... you could white or gray wash the boards to lighten them up a bit.... and if the room is really small.. hand a sliding barn door on the outside of the bathroom... you could use barn or pallet wood for that too (Google Search: Sliding barn door from pallet wood... choose the "more images" selection.... click the photo(s) you like and choose "visit")

The rest of the room could be painted on of the lighter colors in the wood.

Think about how you are going to keep it clean before you go with the "rustic" look. Fluffy dusters and cloths get caught up in it and the cobwebs want to stick to it! Been there, done that!

Its always nice to do one feature wall in a color you like then coordinate with another color on the remaining walls.
