Put some pretty glass bowls or pitchers on top of the cabinets. You could also use some twinkle Christmas lights if you have access to a plug. If you use canisters, buy them in a color and place on counter top.
By trim do you mean appliqués? Because flat stock around the edges would make them look like Mission style doors.

D, I had a successful interior decorating business for many years so I am not just talking out of my hat here. The first thing I see when I look at these pictures is a lack of serenity. So here is what I would do. (a) Because you have white appliances, I would paint (again, I know...) the cabinets white to match them. (b) Remove the hardware and hinges and purchase INVISIBLE hinges this time. All those hinges and handles clutter up the visual space of an already-cramped kitchen. (c) Also, purchase new cabinet KNOBS, not handles. Patch the upper hole where you had the handles. KEEP the cup pulls (the ones on the drawers). Consider spraying the cup pulls chrome and getting crystal or chrome knobs. (d) As to color, what color, coming from a room adjacent to your kitchen (for continuity and flow) would you like to see in here? I would add it in a backsplash (peel and stick ones are not expensive, if that is a consideration, and come in several colorways) as well as in an area rug. Also, find a coordinating piece of fabric and make a curtain to mount on a rod pocket to cover the space below your sink. (e) Remove the items above the cabinets above the stove -- they just add to the chaos -- and corral items used together in a shallow basket or colored tray. (f) Mount your paper towels inside the cabinet door below your sink. (g) That wall to the left of your stove -- I can't tell what it is covered it, but could you put matching baskets down it -- 3 perhaps -- and place your spices, pot holders, and dishtowels in them? The baskets could be spray painted to pick up three colors from your rug and backsplash. *whew* Go get started, girl!
Sorry, left one thing out. Meant to say, remove the covering on the wall to the left of the stove before you hang the baskets and just paint white. Thanks. Good luck!
Find a stencil you like and paint them on the top edge. It would probably help if you also added a semigloss clear coat over them.
I love the idea of the lower cabinets in a dark gray or dark blue. I think adding a backsplash of some nice glass tile will liven it up and perhaps not make it look dingy next to the white white appliances. i love to cook and need some If my stuff out but I try to organize in baskets or trays to keep clutter down.
You got some wonderful free advice from an experienced designer. Listen to her!. I would just add that even before you start work on your project, just arranging things (or eliminating what you can) makes everything look immediately better!
