Suggestions for tub to shower conversion?

I am thinking of having my old 70's tub converted to a shower only as I am a /sr. citizen and it gets harder and harder to climb into the tub. I never take a bath, just a shower. I would be interested in the one piece surround shower and wonder if I should use Lowe's or Home Depot and have one of their contractors install it rather than a place such as Bath Wrap, Bath Fitters, etc. Would that be a better and less expensive choice?

Yes, a walk in shower with grab bars certainly is easier and much safer than a slippery tub to get in and out of. Having a tub/shower unit removed and a new shower installed is done all the time.
However, depending on the size and layout of the bathroom, it isn't always an easy job, and it will require coordinating a carpenter, plumber, and possibly an electrician also. Sometimes there is damage to the existing bathroom that occurs at the time of demo and removal. The finishing stage will require someone who is skilled at connecting and integrating in any damaged areas between the 'old' and the 'new'.
If you arrange to have 2 or 3 quotations on the job cost, you should find that prices will be competitive. Some people find it convenient to work with a large home improvement store due to their evening and weekend hours. You purchase the product (shower) at the store, then although the labour is contracted out, a store staff member will go through the paperwork with you and do the scheduling.
With smaller firms, you deal directly with their staff usually at their premises. Often though, smaller firms specialize in and take on only custom design or higher end jobs as they have fewer staff. There is no right or wrong to who you choose to sign a contract with. It is entirely your preference.

I replaced a 1955 tub in the 90's and wish I had had a walk-in tub installed instead of a regular tub. Since then I have added three assist handles/bars as I have had bi-lateral hip replacement and other surgeries. The grab bars help a lot. Also a suction cup bath mat is good. Cannot take baths anymore so I have a step stool that stays in the tub so I can sit and use my Shower Massage. Also wear a Great Call necklace in case I fall. You adjust.
