Welcome back, !
Erika began by clearing her floor of any dust and debris. Once the floor had been properly cleaned, Erika primed it using Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer by Insl-x. STIX primer is perfect for a stencil project like this because it adheres to the floor and provides a great base for painting and stenciling. After the primer was dry, Erika applied her base coat.

Spray adhesive is optional and can help with reducing paint seepage through the stencil but is not necessary! She sprayed the back of her Marlen Tile Stencil and placed it flat against the surface.
As she stenciled along the floor, she aligned each tile stencil with the stencil’s easy to use registration marks so she could paint the entire floor evenly! Our DIY tile stencils make it so simple for anyone to create their own stencil masterpiece.

Erika used a small stencil brush to pounce the three different paint colors onto the tile floor. Simply load and offload the stencil brush to remove excess paint that could produce bleed. Don’t be afraid to play around with different paint colors for a multi color tile design!

Peel back the stencil from the tile floor and check out how perfect the stencil pattern came out! Amazing what a stencil and a little creativity can do. Feel free to touch up any spots with another small stencil brush if needed!
Once the entire tile floor was stenciled over, she completes the project by applying two coats of water-based Polyurethane. Adding these coats increases the protection and durability of the tile stencil pattern- You don’t want to forget that step! Let’s just take a moment to appreciate how her hard work has paid off!

Would I need to prime the entire tile to stencil a design on it?

  • Becky Becky on Jul 04, 2019

Thank you for telling us about your magic bullet, the STIX primer! I looked it up after reading your project guidelines. It sounds like quite the miracle product. But it says it can't withstand continuous water contact. Which room did you stencil? = because I'm wondering how this would hold up in our full guest bathroom that has a shower incase the guest splashed water.

I really really appreciate your ideas and any feedback you can give about the water. Since I would paint over the primer and seal the top coat, maybe the water wouldn't be an issue.

I giess I also wonder if it would be safe to use my SHARK steam cleaner on it. What do you think?

    Thanks again! -Becky
