A Rainy Day Project - Cleaning up and Decluttering My Makeup

It seems I spend half my life decluttering! I have a small plastic cabinet with drawers that I keep my makeup in, on the bathroom counter. I have a simple system for the three drawers: top drawer is for eye makeup and supplies, middle drawer holds my foundation, blush and powder, and the bottom drawer holds lipstick. I was also keeping my earrings that I wear most often in a small soap dish and many duplicates scattered around. I did some research online, and the general rules I found said the limit on mascara and liquid liners is three months (I tossed mine, since I'd had them for awhile).
Here are the drawers, filled with makeup, brushes, tools, earrings, bobbie pins, etc. So first I pulled everything out of each drawer, and washed out all of the drawers since they were a little grubby. A little dish detergent, a good scrub in the sink, and set out to air dry. I did the same thing with the makeup brushes, although I washed them with some green tea tree shampoo, and then stood them up in a cup to dry. Do something else until everything is nice and dry.
Some products have expiration dates, some are obviously old (if I can't remember the last time I used it, or when I bought it, time to go in the trash can I had handy). Cream/oil based products (like liquid foundation) last about six months, once opened. Lipstick lasts about a year. When you read up on the subject, you'll find a variety of advice. My best advice is what I said at the beginning of this paragraph. Also, if you notice a change in texture or you find your skin is irritated, toss the product.
While I was cleaning, I pulled out my hair brushes, also, soaked them in green tea tree shampoo and then rinsed them and air dried them, since I was cleaning. I have a tendency to keep adding items to what I'm doing while working on a project. So, while sorting, I also went through my makeup bag from my purse, and overnight bag. The amusing thing to me, is that I wear very little makeup on a daily basis. But, the stuff accumulates!
Now, the drawers aren't tightly packed with stuff that I don't use or shouldn't use. I took some shelf liner and cut it to fit in the now dry drawers.
I put a clean, matching microfiber cloth on top of the cabinet after wiping it down. The bucket, which I had been using before for odds and ends now has my magnifying mirror, etc., neatly stored.
I used a multi level craft holder I already had, to sort the jewelry I wear on a daily basis, and some supplies that didn't have a home. That gets everything off the counter and easy to stow under the sink while protecting everything. This project actually cost me nothing, since I already had all these items on hand. All of these products could be purchased inexpensively (the one I have my jewelry in was in the craft section of Walmart and was less than $5). The small drawer units are inexpensive, and the shelf liner was left over from cleaning out and relining my pantry. The metal bucket was décor I picked up in the spring, but, inexpensive buckets are always available, even at the dollar store, if you want to use any of these items. Hope this gives you some ideas for storing your makeup and the other items that tend to takeover the bathroom counter.
