You could distress it or paint it a different color. If you really want to change it, you could tile over it. Here's a link about tiling over brick:

Hi Barbara, you actually can cover brick. You will need masonry anchors to drill into it, then you can attach cement board (if you would like to tile it) or drywall to match the walls you have on either side of it.
Do you wan to remove the paint, and repaint, stain or go over the fireplace?
Depending on the look you are trying to achieve you could use tile, granite, rock, or stone, and put it right over the existing brick. Make sure to rough up the brick so that the new product will adhere properly.
Good luck
We had the exact problem only thr bricks were brown. We drywalled above the ledge and used a modern brick on the bottom. Love it.
We had the same problem, only our brick was brown. We put drywall o er the brick above the ledge and modernized with stack stone below the ledge. See before and after photos.
Ours used to look like this and years ago we had it covered with stones. If I recall, mortar was used and the pieces were cut to fit like a jigsaw puzzle. We've never had any issues. I'm attaching a picture.
-Painting the bricks of the fireplace the same colour as the walls is a no-construction solution to helping make it less prominent.
