How To Turn A License Plate Into A Welcome Sign

I hate to say this about myself but I think I may be a pack rat of sorts. I saved a few license plates with the thought I could make something with them. Well I finally did. I made a sign to welcome guests. That’s right, a welcome sign.
I decided to use two of them and cleaned them off.  The novelty license plates had printing on them so I spray painted them.  Looking back I probably didn’t need to.
I traced the shape of the license plate on the pretty paper I use.  You see I decided to decoupage the paper on the license plates, both front, and back.
The next step is to iron on flocked letters.  “Welcome” was put on one license plate and “Home” on the other plate.  That was a bit tricky.  Once the letters are dry it is time to start decoupaging.
In my thrift store travels, I had bought some purse handles.  One of them was broken but that is the handle I used.  It was a perfect fit to use as a hanger for the sign.  It got painted white and matches the letters.
To hang the sign, links from an old chain was used.  Two links attached the purse handle to the license plate that says “Welcome”.  Then two links connected the welcome license plate to the one that says “Home”.
It makes a pretty welcome by the front door or in the garden.  But a word of caution, I wouldn’t leave it out in the rain.

If you want to leave it outside, why not spray with an acrylic varnish?

What was the wrapping paper used for? Wouldn't any old license plates work? And why not coat with a clear varnish or paint? You don't always know when it is going to rain or if the wind will blow the sprinkler water on it.
