Crown mouldings in kitchen I want replaced with a larger crown . This is my first time tackling this type project. What's a girl going to do๐Ÿ˜€. How hard is it to mitre? How much do carpenters charge to hang crown if I can't do it myself? (Just a round about price)

  • you will need a miter box but let me tell you, I am terrible at that part. I have a really hard time with corners. Do you have any friends who are handy? I got some help from a co-worker's husband. You definitely want some extra, ask at the home store where you buy the molding.

I would add about 10% more as the mitres take some figuring. If you can get the use of a real mitre saw this will make your work much easier and give you nicer joints. You should be able to return any unused full lengths of material to the store. You could probably rent a saw if you do not have one or even borrow one from a friend.

Take a measurement of the length of crown molding you need. Run a tape measure from one corner to the next and read the measurement. On inside corners, the end of the tape represents the long point of the miter cut, but on outside corners, the end of the tape is the shortest point of the cut.

In my area, carpenters charge about $40 - $50 an hour. WE extended our kitchen cupboards by the length of the last two bays to the right. If you can believe it the moulding was still in the cellar, 75 years after this kitchen was built, so my husband had to install and cut the moulding on the two corners on the right. I know he made a mistake cutting the outer one, made the cut going in, not going out. Practice on some scrap wood, it doesn't have to be the real thing. You will get the hang of it.

You can get an inexpensive miter box at big box diy stores, mine is plastc, and bright yellow. It keeps the cuts on the correct angle.

Or you could do foam crown molding. Less than 50% of the cost of wood, comes in all sizes and shapes, you can buy the inside and outside precut corners or corner pieces. They are much lighter than wood, paintable and can be applied with caulk adhesive. Just google foam crown molding and there are a ton of sites showing tons of sizes and profiles, even some which you can put led lights in. You will also find all kinds of videos about how to install DIY.

I always buy 10% more material no matter what I am doing.
