Hello. You can as long as they can survive the climate in TX. I have brought back Irises from AR to WI, and they are doing great! Good Luck.
I am from the Cincinnati area and in Zone 5, like you are, and I lived in Austin TX for 15 years. The short and quick answer is 'No." There are pretty trees in Texas. You'll fall in love with the Live Oak and it's black branches and green leaves and it's growth patterns - very interesting forms and shapes. Bring your potted plants with you and see how they do. You'll do a lot more watering in Texas. There are roses specific to the climate in Texas that you can buy. Coleus should survive well. Lavender does well in Texas. It's not good to bring trees and shrubs to another state/climate because you may be bringing one that doesn't work with the native plants and trees; they might thrive in Abilene, but they also might threaten/wipe out the native species. Good luck on your move. The Texas folks are friendly as all get-out and you are in for some fabulous barbeque, brisket and cobbler!
Mad32129610, We are currently going on our 28th year in Abilene, Texas. Gla33476591 is right about our Live Oaks, but they take ages to grow. We do grow beautiful Pecan trees, Red Oaks, Maple trees, Pine trees, Cottonwood trees, Ash, Dogwood, Mesquite, Sumac, Mulberry. The shrubs are very pretty. It seems that a lot of Crepe Myrtle is grown here (fast growing and pretty), Wax-leaf Ligustrum, Boxwood, Wisteria, Azalea, Burning Bush, and vines: Honeysuckle, Trumpet Vine, Ivies. Roses and flowers are abundant and beautiful. My husband is a Master Gardener. That is something you might like to check into. They have registration in January for classes. Vernon really enjoyed being involved with the group. We say we live in Abilene, but we have a Clyde address, a Potosi listing in the phone book, and if we had children at home, they would go to school in Eula. I would like to welcome you to Abilene. Get in touch with me if you care to.
Enjoy it! One thing I forgot to add, one of my favorite "Midwestern trees", the Sycamore, grows just as tall and beautiful in Texas as it does "back home."
