How can I bring my two room kitchen together to form one room?

My house has an add-on along the back of the house so it added a second room to my kitchen. The load bearing wall is right in the center dividing the two rooms. The wall is open in the very center creating a pass through. The counter top spans into both rooms. Help!

Please hire an engineer, you dont want the roof to cave in on you

A professional should be able to work it for you. Fb all else fails you have a huge small appliance storage and pantry with a pass thru to the kitchen

I believe a good carpenter can help you out. Load bearing walls can be dealt with in several different ways. You may have to add a column or two or you may have to add a strong beam across the top that ties in somehow. This most definitely isn't a do-it -yourself project. Best wishes

  • Agree with Sarah - an engineer will give the best advice.

Personally, I do that when you have a load bearing wall you can sometimes install a beam in order to remove the wall and open your kitchen.

What about leaving the wall but making a large pass thru?

It can be done, but you do need professional help to remove the wall safely. An engineer or construction contractor will be able to help you.

Thank you for all your great answers! I've decided to hire a general contractor for this project! That way if an engineer is needed he can call one in for advice. Thanks again!
