Cigarette burns on hardwood floors

I moved into a townhouse simply for financial reasons and the people who had lived there before me trashed the house including a warped fridge, broken stove, cigerettr burns all over hardwood floors and the Co-op That I moved into said that it was my problem now and they would do nothing to clean the place up. It is embarrassing to have people come into your home and see this discration. The Gov’t owned property just does not care and I need to do something, I feel like such a low-life. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix these burns at least enough to look presentable to myself and my company that will come to visit. Please help in any way you can

Work an area thats near corner. Sand first light grain paper the would polish

Have you tried sanding the spots where the cigarette burns are? That may help

  • Yup, I feel for you! So sad that no one cares. I find this to be personally reprehensible. Document every single repair you make with receipts, photos and correspondence. If you have a good CPA, you can write off the expenses.

Clean clean clean. From top to bottom. Vinegar cleans almost everything. For the cigarette burns on the floor, see if you can sand them out. This will be a big job, and I would suggest hiring out if you have the money. If not, rugs are your new best friend.

And if it were me, as you have absolutely nothing to lose here, I would leave the floor as is. Go out and purchase an inexpensive wood burning tool kit. Turn those burns into art! Make them have a purpose by adding more. Take a negative and turn it into a positive for the least amount of money.

If you are a renter I would find some inexpensive area rugs to cover what I could and place furniture over the burns wherever you can. Clean like you have never cleaned before, as cigarette smoke clings to every surface and lingers until it is removed. Ammonia and water removes the film it leaves on walls, cabinets, appliances, windows and floors and leaves a clean smell when you finish. Be safe and best of luck to you.

The floors may not have much sealer left on them. Use a wax stripper, or just some Pinesol, Ajax cleaning powder, and water with a good sponge mop. Buy a small can of Minwax Wood Stain in the darkest color you can stand (or black paint). Try this stain out in a place that will always be covered by a sofa or bed to make sure it will disguise the burns and will please you. Go to dark blue or brown if you want to. Once you have decided, clean and stain one room or area at a time. Then choose what floor cleaner, wax, or sealer you will use. (My husband changes every month, I think.) Buy two bottles of that if you can, so you won’t run out. (Hubby does ours every Saturday night to be ready for Sunday dinner. He will never change our semigloss laminate into a high gloss mirror finish— but don’t tell him.)

Lau (Laura?), it will be a big adjustment to move into public housing, but decide what you can live with. Get the locks changed on all doors, clean everything as spotlessly as you can, and keep your standards high. You will find neighbors who do the same, and those who don’t. Keep your front door clean, your home smelling good, and your walls covered in things that make you happy. As you find problems you can’t solve, come back to Hometalk and let us help. And buy your supplies in Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Walmart. We can help you in most cases. Best wishes ☺️ Jewell

You can sand the burns out, but matching the sanded area to the rest of the floor may be tough. You can take a picture of the wood to a home improvement store to try to match the stain. I would practice/experiment in an inconspicuous place before starting on the main floor area. Best wishes!

Hi there, My idea is to Stencil something onto the wood to disguise the burns or Stick self adhesive tiles over the marks or Stickers of some sort. If they are randomly over the floor maybe you could use Sharpies to make flowers etc. to hide them. Is you are short of cash, a trip to the Thrift store or 2nd. hand market or Charity store might present the answer to your other problems. They might even have a decent carpet or rug that might help you out. Good luck, hope you get sorted real soon........

What kind of government property? HUD low-income or Rural Development property? if so they should have a form to make necessary repairs to the unit, if they don't you can contact the agency for help. I have never heard of a Coop that is government owned and I work for the State with disabled and senior clients. I would be sure to photo document all the apartment defects so they don't try to go after you when you move out, and to do copies to the agency if you go that route. You can also go to your local Landlord-Tennant Board to have them assist you, but that will only work if your a renter, not the new coop owner.

To fix the burns you can go two routes - First I would scrape off the burn bits and then 1) they make hard wax sticks in wood tones that you melt into floor defects, and 2) you could get either some wood tone wood paste and fill the defect, sand smooth and put some wipe on poly over it (make sure to get the same finish i.e. matt, satin, gloss) or you can buy regular wood filler, I like Famowood water-based wood filler, and get some stain to match the floors, then sand, and use poly on top. If you got lots to fix, borrow a skateboard and scoot around to fix them.

Thanks so much for your input. You have been very very helpful and out of the 8 comments I received back your makes the most sense so THANKYOU for that. Just know that CANADA is not the greatest place to live. They treat outsiders way better than they treat their own people. The government really doesn’t give a darn.

      Take good care
