Have a fully functional side by side fridge that I want to use outside for picnics and additional freezer space year round.

Need to protect from extreme heat, sun etc. Any advice?

Given your location, you'll be most likely wasting energy. The use of small outdoor refrigerators is usually under structures where the refrigerator has been well insulated from external temps. You need to consult specialists who deal with outdoor refrigeration.

Put in garage if you have one, if not consider building a lean too shed on the back or side of house.

Do you have a garage you can keep the fridge in rather than outside? I agree that you would need to protect it from sun and excessive heat. If you had a 3 season porch I would say maybe. I do have an extra fridge in my garage but I know that in my area when the temps dip way below zero for weeks and it is plugged in in the unheated section of my garage the fridge/freezer will not work right in the cold winter temps of that part of the garage--0 degrees or colder--and keep things frozen in the freezer. The fridge just stops working all together. I had to move it to the heated section of my garage so I could depend on it. SInce I have done that--and the temp hovers around 40 to 45 degrees all winter it works fine.

I have a side by side and a chest freezer in my garage. We can get over 100 degrees in the summer with high humidity, and as low as 40 degrees below zero in the winter. I have had no problems with them, other than when it gets too cold, some things in the fridge do freeze. Most of what I keep in that fridge don't get hurt by freezing.

Most basic kitchen appliances are not designed to function well in an outdoor environment... especially if you live some place like AZ... too much heat and too much dust.... if you are especially energy conscious.. this would not be a good idea..... Putting it in a garage would be the best alternative if you want to still use it .
