Is it more practical to paint badly worn kitchen cabinets or tear out and install new, which will mean new sink, faucet, counter tops, etc.

Well from a budget stand point, you could just keep them and sand them and paint. Maybe some new hardware. But if you arenโ€™t worried about busting the bank then treat yourself to nicely remodeled kitchen ๐Ÿ˜Š

New cabinets sound so good but the bank is not limitless. I think the new hardware, hinges, faucets, etc might do if we can do a descent job of painting and not mess it up.

Hi Emily, if they are in bad shape only on the front, I'd consider just getting new doors and refinishing the sides only. Another possibility is removing the doors and stripping the finish off and sanding out the nicks and dings - use woodfiller if needed and go from there in painting or restaining.

the woodfiller is a great idea and we will paint so that won't be a problem. Just sounds like a lot of work, I'll follow another suggestion and get new cabinet estimates first, that will definitely spur my decision one way or anther. Thank you for your input!!

It's cheaper to paint if they just look shabby or outdated. But if they are worn and have dings that will show then a kitchen makeover is in order. There are lots of ideas here on Hometalk no matter what you decide. ttps://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=kitchen%20makeover

Wow, there is so much good info on that website, I have not begun to see all they have to suggest. Thank you so much for suggesting it. Much obliged!!

I would start by pricing the new...that may answer your question. A good paint job really refreshes worn cabinets if they are structurally sound.

Carol, Thanks for the wake up call, I should have done that before asking anything. I have a feeling it will be too much for our budget so that is why I have been leaning toward painting. But I will go in tomorrow to check...thank you once again. Very nice of you to answer.

I would paint or gel stain them. We gel stained ours - https://www.justmeasuringup.com/kitchen-cabinet-makeover/. It was a ton of work but I would do it again for all the money we saved. Chalk paint might be a little easier too.

Your cabinets are absolutely beautiful. I won't use stain however, because I want white cabinets. The kitchen is small and rather dark.

But your process was very helpful, many useful suggestions. How neat of you to photograph the progress for future use. Thank you for your help, very much appreciated...!!

My home was built 1989, I painted my cabinets, used the kitchen cabinet refinishing, changed the hinges and handles, it has been 5 years now, still Love them, Home Depot gave me an estimate of $23, 480, to reface and deeper drawers.

Kitchen cabinet refinishing sounds like a kit. Sounds easier as well??

I will probably try the painting route since you had such good luck maybe I will as well. Thanks so much for your help!!
