What to put between patio blocks?
I plan on putting in a patio on top of level grassy ground. I want the grass to grow around the square flat stone blocks without having to dig down to set them. My question is what should I put between the stone to encourage the grass to fill in. Top soil, garden soil, sand, or something else?

If you do not dig out and put in the blocks level, you will regret it and you will be creating a hazard.
you can still dig it out, level it with sand, tamp down, level again, place blocks, then seed between the blocks (if that's the look you want) make sure when leveling and installing blocks that you stay at your lawns height, so you can mow over it. Moss is great between blocks also
It is really not that bad. I too a hatchet and cut out the grass and dirt so I could put down stepping stones...we just mow over these.
Just take it slow and easy and leave a couple of inches of grass around each paving stone. I used the 12x12 brick ones. This was to eliminate the muddy path being worn from walking from the driveway up a sloping hill. It has been down 15 years! Doing just fine!
