Hi my name is Melanie and I'm a solar light addict. If any of you have seen any of my recent posts you will know what I am talking about. There is just something magical about solar lights that I love. I have this post in my backyard that was once home to a bird feeder but it was quite close to our backstep so we were forever cleaning bird droppings. I have been trying to figure out what to do with it and I just kept picturing an umbrella on top of it, add some solar lights and voila!
First step is to gather your supplies which an umbrella, solar mini string lights (150), paint .
My post was in desperate need of a paint job so I used a white gloss interior/exterior paint to freshen it up.
Here it is nice and white.
Next we are going to drill a hole in the top where the umbrella will go.
Now we are going to cut the umbrella. I used my crafters multi tool which is great for cutting a variety of things.
So you are going to cut about two inches below where the button is to close the umbrella. You need to keep the umbrella open.
Here is what it should look like now, time to put it in the drilled hole on top of the post. Your hole size will be determined by your umbrella you use.
Next I put a nail at the top of the post front and back and using a piece of wire secured my umbrella so that the wind will not blow it off.
Now it is time to start adding your solar lights. Use a staple gun to secure to your post.
I did three strips of lights up and down the pole, third strip you should be at your umbrella. I just followed the frame of the umbrella securing the lights with frame by pushing them under the frame.
Continue doing this all around your umbrella until you don't have any lights left.
Here it is finished.
Here it is at night lit up. Love it!

Sooooo pretty! Would I have to remove the umbrella in the winter due to snow covering it? I'm in northern Minnesota.
