If you're going to live there for very long I would consider planting some trees. My backyard faces the West, so I understand what you mean when you say too much sun !!!
Pergola
Shade Sail
Pavilion
Until you plant your tree, you could use a large Shade Sail", anchored to tall, sturdy posts.
You could build a long narrow pagoda there, this allow sun in when you want it, or set up a gazebo 8 foot by 8 foot. There are also sun shades you can hang to break up the hot sun

Shade sail may be the solution. Unfortunately my entire yard is cenent! I will post pic so you all can get an idea!
If you live in Florida please look on the internet "FloridaGardner.com". They have a complete list of fast growing trees. But also Look at the list of 12 trees that are not allowed in Florida (outside). But for quick shade I agree go with the sail cloth. Or they have ready to make covered and screened outdoor pavilions.
Thank you
A shade sail would do the job.
