Kathy...You can strip the white paint off....sand then use the stain you would like....I like Citristrip!

Thanks for your help! The mantel has a lot of “nooks and crannies“ - will the Citristrip work in them also, or should I use something else?

  • In order to stain it, you'll need to strip the paint off with a chemical stripper or a heat gun. Afterwards, sand then stain and seal.

    • You'll probably need a stiff brush to scrub those. Strip the whole thing first, then go back and hit the areas that didn't come back. You'll use the brush then but don't over scrub or you can damage the wood. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and protective eyewear.

Use the Citristrip to strip the paint. It's a gel type stripper made for vertical surfaces and is safe. For the nooks and crannies use a small brass brush with the stripper. Won't harm the wood. Made specifically for getting into hard to reach areas.
