My mantel is white. How do I stain it dark brown?

Kathy...You can strip the white paint off....sand then use the stain you would like....I like Citristrip!
In order to stain it, you'll need to strip the paint off with a chemical stripper or a heat gun. Afterwards, sand then stain and seal.
Use the Citristrip to strip the paint. It's a gel type stripper made for vertical surfaces and is safe. For the nooks and crannies use a small brass brush with the stripper. Won't harm the wood. Made specifically for getting into hard to reach areas.
