A lot of times to make a room look bigger light colors are recommended. So maybe going to a white/off white will brighten and help make the room feel bigger. You can also paint your vanity if you like and that will give it a fresh new feel as well as adding a little back splash if you like. Here are some Hometalkers who have done updated their bathrooms. Take a look through these and see what inspires you and what you might want to add to your home - https://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=bathroom%20updates&r=0

I think your decor is fine. You have 2 options to lighten up: paint the walls lighter or paint the cabinet and wooden decor items a lighter color (white wash, maybe?). On another note, changing out the shower curtain to a solid airy one might help a lot.

We have a powder room like this -- worse...it has one of those corner showers with doors and a tray. The floor was old and yellowed lino and the previous owners painted the walls a blue grey. It had chrome fixtures and a huge pine storage cupboard over the toilet. I hated it!

While still a work in progress, the first thing I did was add an inexpensive dado running around the room. I painted the upper portion what I thought was a white (it was called white spruce). In fact, it was a minty colour and I love it. The hideous chrome light fixture and matching towel rack and toilet roll holder made my teeth ache so the light was painted in place with a combination of cream and white chalk paint...causing it to blend back into the wall. Then I used Wall Doctor paintable wallpaper on the bottom and painted all the trim in BM Snowfall White. The other chrome fixtures will likely end up at a charity shop.

That left the miserable floor. The space was too tight to put down a floor without taking all the fixtures out...plumber needed. So, I used outdoor patio/deck paint and then a regular latex. I stencilled it but didn't like it. Scrounging through my paint section, I found a couple of cans of spray-on stone effect. It looks interesting but has a texture and needs another two cans. I walked on it this morning and left foot prints so I cleaned it with a damp cloth. The texture is gone and the paint spread to a thicker consistency...almost like slate. I'll seal the whole thing with polyurethane when I finally figure out the floor. More work ahead. I'm planning to add some light "floating shelves and some artwork and I'll be able to move onto the kitchen.

If it works, I'll post photos.

All white. Maybe pique curtains. Pictures with mirrored frames. Pictures pastel shades. Silver or chrome. Glass shelving, if needed.

I like the shower curtains that you have. I would paint any of the wood a lighter color including window and mirror frames and paint the walls just a little darker.

The fastest, and cleanest way of updating a bathroom is to replace the light fixture with a new one, and use LED bulbs. This in itself should eliminate the harsh, shadowy light that is presently in the rooms. The light in the bathroom will be clear, crisp, and much brighter, and then you can choose new wall colours if you still want to paint.

I have two bathrooms that are quite small and no windows. It looks like you do have a window in the one bath that is covered by a picture. I would remove the picture covering it to allow more light and I agree that new LED lighting, (or just the bulbs), to brighten up the space. A small cabinet over the stool to place the extra little things we all tend to accumulate would clean up the space, which always makes spaces look bigger. Maybe pick lighter paint colors with accent colors taken from the shower curtain would pull everything together. Also swag the shower curtains back to help open up the space more. Hope this helps a little. You can do it!
