My grandmother always told us to leave cucumber pealings around the base of cabinets and across door thresholds! Natural repellant! Replace them once a week.

    Jul,

Where do you see them and where do you think the nest is? When I had them they were in a beam in my porch that had rotted. I had to take the trim off to get to them. Then I had to replace the beam because it was no longer structurally sound. Make sure yours have not done anything to damage your structure.Try this link:

They are really hard to get rid of. I'm all for natural DIY remedies, but they don't eradicate carpenter ants long term. In fact, sometimes even pesticides don't work 2 years in a row. The ants seem to become immune to them.

I use Terro baits, diatomaceous earth in cracks, and I spray my counters and floor with equal parts bottles lemon juice, vinegar and 2 big squirts of dishwashing liquid, then wipe. Vinegar alone didn't repel them at all. I also put bay leaves in cabinets, it does help.

Did you try Terro liquid baits? They aren't bad. Advance is supposed to be good. They don't sell it where I live. Diatomaceous Earth works and so does borax. Just remember that if you are seeing a few in the house, there are probably hundreds + in the walls. The thing is if you try and spray in the walls, the queen moves the nest, and it makes matters worse, if you son't know how to do it right..

If you can, hire an exterminator, since the ants can do structural damage.

If not, some exterminator sites sell their pesticides online.

    Good luck!

If they are not responding to OTC insecticides, you need a professional exterminator.... and there are ones that use natural insecticides derived from chrsythamums. These ants will eat your house. Remove all sources of dead wood in your yard, clean it up good. I did a walk through for one of my clients with the exterminator and the origin point was an old wooden barrel she had as a decorative piece in her yard and he followed the trail right to the house.

20 Mule Team Laundry Borax works also, but if they are in the house - they are eating your house.

Food grade diatomaceous earth, sprinkled on floors or outside, by entryways, wipe counters, walls and floors, interior of cabinets with vinegar solution to interrupt the trail they make for other ants. Keep all food items in tightly sealed containers, and off counters.
