My neighbor put up an ugly wood privacy fence. How can I dress it up ?

hang art on it or climbing vines, hanging baskets

use container plantings with all plants

Knock out roses would be another good option because they grow fast and super easy to care for and bloom about 9 months out of the year.

We hung mirrors from thrift shops.

Are you allowed to paint your side? If so that would open a lot of options, if not then as suggested above I would try planting some climbing flowering vines, plants, and maybe some taller bushes that would help cover more. You could also hang lights from it at night for a nice effect if it's set up so that you can do that. Good luck!

It depends upon where it was installed. If it is on the property line, in most states you are allowed to attach things to the fence. If it is even 2 inches inside the property line on his property, you are not allowed legally to touch it. Be aware of this before you do anything to it.

It's his fence. You cannot put anything on it without his permission and get it in writing. Otherwise plantings directly in the ground or in pots. Lattice panels for trellises or make some trellises.

IF.... the fence sits directly ON the property line... then you should have been allowed some say in the appearance ... because it effects your property values too..... and you can attach stuff like fence boards or trellises to it....

BUT.... if the fence sits on the neighbors side of the property line.... you cannot attach anything to it, or paint it, with out the neighbors permission (get it in writing)... you can, however plant or put thing on your side to disguise it.... Google Search: Privacy panels, privacy fence, etc.... choose the "more images" option... click the pictures you like... and choose the "visit" tab..... this will give you a lot of ideas and suggestions...

Hey Susan -- actually the fence belongs to them..you can't do anything to it. If you plant shrubbery in front of the fence, be sure they are planted well inside the property line.

IF the fence was put ON the line, actually you 'own' the part that faces your yard, and they 'own' the part that faces their yard ... but that construction usually requires YOUR permission to erect the fence to begin with, and you BOTH would be responsible for the cost/repairs/maintenance, etc.

Have you spoken with the property owner yet? IF they say you can paint, hang things, etc., on the fence be sure to get that permission in writing, and a detailed description of what you want to do...
