When replacing the floor of a deck, should you also replace railing?

Yes. If not nothing will match. Also why double your work.

Refurbishing the deck boards, both the floor boards and cover rail can be done leaving spindles/ rails intact. Deck flooring can be replaced as needed board by board as as well as the top hand rail cover can be pried off and replaced.

We do preventative maintenance like this all the time, we have a front deck -a rear deck and a boat dock. Boards can age can become hazardous or unattractive and need replacing for considerations like splitting and rot. Hope this helps

Hi Maryanne! Ask the person you're hiring about costs to salvage the railing versus installing new. Sometimes the labor involved to save something costs more than if you just go with all new. Maybe you can figure out something to do with the old materials (DIY project) if you decide to do all new. Good Luck!

I would ask the person you're hiring, as they will know the best way to decide. It might be wise to just replace it all so you have everything done fresh and right - otherwise you could end up with needing to replace the railing in a couple years.

I tell everyone the same thing. When you redo one part it makes the leftover part look older. Unless you plan to paint it all, which kinda covers the old.

think it will look better to replace the railing as well unless it is in VERY good condition and will be the same color as the new 'deck'
