How wide are the bottoms and how stable are the empty bottles now?Thinking of traditional chess pieces having very large bases in proportion to their top width, I am wondering if the bottles were to have additional weight and height on top of the small necks, would they be too unstable and tippy to function as chess pieces ....

That sounds like a lovely idea. Add some sand inside the bottles to make them a little heavier. Have you made the chess toppers already?

Great idea because the sand could be two different colors to differentiate the two sides.

If I understand where you are headed- I like it. You are going to use the mini bottles as chess pieces and then top them to differentiate the roles (rook, queen, king, etc.) I would use nothing on the pawns, the rest would have hardware bolted thru the screw cap.

    Rook- a castle nut.

    Bishop- a cap nut

    Knight- possibly a wing nut

Queen and King- Have some fun with some combinations of washers and nuts.

I preferred an aged look so would dissolve the shiny coating with Muriatic acid ( do this outdoors). Rinse and dry. Either :

    1) Heat with a propane torch until you get the color you like, then clear coat; or

    2) Darken with metal darkener. Gun Blueing can be purchased at a gun shop or other treatments are available at craft/stained glass shops. Clear coat.

I will now have to ask friends to collect minis.

    Thanks for the idea.
