You can ask friend for cuttings or bulbs from their gardens and start a flower garden. also call landscapers, ask when they are pulling live shrubs to replace, if you can have them. You can find cheap stones and borders on flea market sites and at yard sales.

If you have a friend who knows how to fall a tree, I would get rid of the Mulberry Tree, I have read that the roots can cause major damage & gets into your sewer system & causes havoc. If you have planters & some friends that have access to cuttings, one of the easiest things to grow is Mint, but keep it in a container or it will become invasive. When you get a cutting, put it in a glass of water and watch for the roots to appear & plant in a container. If you have a friend who is re-landscaping as for bulbs, they don't want Iris's are very easy to grow, when the blooming season ends, cut them to about 2" from the bottom of the plant, they will re-bloom next year. You can also ask a Nursery what they do with plants at the end of a season, you could get them very cheap.

Try using out door metal garbage cans as a border ANYWHERE. Fill with your favorite flowers and/or grasses. I like the grass because it grows really tall and blocks all the ugly. :) You can then use the tops of cans for bird bath(s). Adorn them with rocks and sticks, use your imagination. Good luck.

Oh yeah.....you can weather the garbage cans with some Cider Vinegar for a great rustic look.

Plant some ground cover. Snow in the summer, will spread and cover bare spots. It can be planted in between seasonal plants. It like lots of sun. There are a number ground cover that can be used until you get the grass started. If you are into a vegetable garden you can make the walk ways with your own cement paves. A bag of cement can make several steps. Do not skimp on the cement % you want them to last.
