Amazon sells styrofoam ceiling tiles. I hid my ugly ceiling with bead board for a beach cottage look. Then I found out they make wallpaper for this same purpose !!!!!! (Had I known LOL ) So you might want to look into that application as well

Are the ceilings popcorn texture? Use paintable silicone caulking or scrape, tape etc. For old flar ceilings, use a mesh tape, etc. There’s also a way to add 2 x’s in attic space and screw the drywall then do the crack repair

A professional would dig the crack out, tape it with mesh tape, and apply thin coats of drywall compound, extending and feathering a way out from the crack. then sand (by hand, no power sanders), prime

There are really fast-drying compounds now, which make the wait shorter. Watch you=tube videos on this procedure.here is one- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk6EvKpiG7U

If you have tried to fix and it keeps opening up, try having a professional fix it for you.

Just some mesh tape and compound!
