I saw an idea on this site, use contact paper to cover old ugly floors that are a in a rental or lay scatter rugs down. Or you could get permission from the owner/ landlord to put down a " paper bag floor" found on this site. Good luck.

Perimeter glued sheet vinyl is inexpensive. Often you can get bolt ends at a discount.

We put down peel-and-stick tiles in our bathroom shortly after buying this house. We wanted an inexpensive fix. My husband and I said that it was a temporary fix and we would re-do the floor in a few months. Well, it is now over 2 years and those peel-and-stick tiles still look great. So, our temporary fix turned itself in to a permanent fix. Good luck.

Floor paint is your friend. Be sure to seal it well - if you are creative you can also stencil.
