What's the best way to come up with a palate of colors for my house?

I am wanting to paint every room downstairs in my house. I have my kitchen, the stairwell, the powder room and the living room. I like the grayish colors with some blue in them but I don't want to have a drab house. What can I do to ensure that my house looks elegant, the colors flow and it's not depressing while still using the hot new gray colors?

I always use earth tones. There are different ones. And they don't clash when you leave doors open. Any paint store can help you with your problem.

Most of the time wherever paints are sold they will have little cards showing all the colors of paint they have. They also have cards that team up colors that go well together.
