Magazine rack to shoe store and stool.

I needed a small stool to lay my clothes on that I took off at night, I don't have much room in the bedroom. I only had a 11 inch width space in my wardrobe.

I couldn't buy a stool small enough. At the moment I had a shoe rack taking up the space so I needed to combine the two.

I spotted a magazine rack at a boot sale. I took it home and started transforming it.

I didn't want to paint it as it was wood.

I decided to use macrame instead.

Magazine rack before transforming.

I took some fine rope approx three times the height, I used multitudes of four each side.

I then i made some knots on to the wood. I trimmed the bottoms when I had finished.

Adding the macrame,

Once I had finished the macrame, I needed a top. I had to raise it somehow as the shoes where too tall.

I got my husband to cut a top using the measurements of the width and sides of the rack out of some scrap wood. Then some added small pieces for the sides, these were glued with pink grip and then screwed down.

I need to fix it on the rack so I could take it off easy to get to the shoes. I couldn't fix with hinges as there was not enough clearance. My husband suggested some Push on clips, these went in the middle on top of some more scrap wood.

These work but do scratch the wood inside. It wouldn't be seen, so I wasn't bothered.

Middle section of lid with the grips fixed.

The next stage was to cover the box lid. I did this with some foam left over from another project. I stuck this on with spray mount. Then I covered the top with a piece of a old blue table cloth that matched the colour of my room. I did this by stapling it on. I glued some felt on the inside to tidy it up.

The top looked a little plain when finished, So I took some of the string trimmings and shaped a heart and sew it on the top.

Before adding top decoration

I'm pleased with the result, although if I were to use this to sit on I would use more stable connections for the top as it does slide.
