I would get flowering shrubs and plants that have variegated (multi-colored) leaves. Go to your local plant nursery as they will have plants that grow in your area.
So exciting to landscape a place for your home! I found Better Home's and Garden's list for top Florida plants - https://www.bhg.com/gardening/gardening-by-region/south/florida-plants/
It depends upon what you like and how much work you want to put into it. Straight edges are easier to mow around a garden. I like curved gardens. Tall plants go in the back, then medium height, then small in front. If you have sun, the front can have annuals. Bulbs are good too.
Go to your local nursery and see what they are selling since they only stock plants guaranteed to grow in your region. They can also give you ideas and possibly a plot plan specific to your lot. I would also to a walk around of your neighborhood and take photos of landscapes you love and use those as incentives/models,
Thanks everyone, ready to get my hands dirty.LOL
