How to repaint or replace countertop?

by Lori Kelly

I painted my kitchen countertops 2 years ago. I was just so tired of beige laminate countertop! So far, except where the pictures show, they have held up VERY WELL. The part shown is the front edge of the sink, as one can probably tell. I still have the paints that I used, so...do I ignore these areas and wait until I can afford countertops OR just repaint the worn area?

The last 2 pictures are of other areas of the countertops.

    Hi Lori,

If in front of the sink is the only bad part, I personally would repaint it. It looks like it was done with sponging so you should be able to hide the edges with an extra coat or 2 and by feathering the edges. Definitely seal it. You might want to give the whole counter a new coat of sealer too. Sealer can wear off over time so adding extra sealer can only be a good thing. :) Wishing you the best.

      Hi Lori,

I've read that resealing every few years will help the whole thing last longer. Looks like our minds are in tune with each other's. Good luck. If you can, take pics and post your project so we can all see your solution. :)

If you still have paint, then redoing that area makes sense. Now you know that you need to be careful with that area and you should be able to make it last longer this time. You did a great job!

Easy to do. I used a sea sponge and paper plates and a feather. I sanded the shine off, kilzed the countertop and started sponging randomly. The black made it pop! That’s when I used the feather. After everything dried, I sealed it. Have fun!

I would fix the areas that need fixing - until you are ready for something new.

That’s not bad at all for two years wear and tear. That’s probably going to be a vulnerable spot at the sink. I would definitely just redo that spot. Great job though. Looks very nice.

Thank you! I’m always careful with knives and have ALWAYS used cutting boards. I enjoyed doing this. I really hate to spend money😂

    Hello,

Maybe cover the area with a temporary sheet or block that you can work on until you can afford to change, that is unless you want to keep painting it? Or, maybe tile the area.
