If you do this DIY, please take pictures and follow up with a post here - we need your honest recommendations on this. I have owned a house with dyed carpeting, but it was done professionally, so I don't have personal experience in this.

i dyed my living room carpet a while back. It is older carpet and had stains i couldn't get out. First i cleaned my carpet and while it was wet, I used liquid rit dye, hot water, and vinegar. I put it in my carpet cleaner and went at it. if you google using liquid rit dye to dye carpet you will get instructions. this is the instructions i used: Rit dye recipe for dying the carpets (i did not use sprayer, i put in my carpet cleaner) Once done you really have to clean your carpet cleaner really really good so you don't dye anything else....

    Based on 2 gallon sprayer

    2 gallons = 32 cups

    3 cups vinegar

    1 1/2 cups color (1 1/2 -8 oz bottles)

    1/2 cup softener

    32 cups HOT water

Pour the color, vinegar and softener in the container first, swirl it around to mix up, then add the water. The hotter the better. Hot water helps open up the “pores” in the fibers to set the stain in the carpet.
