Maybe dissolve baking soda and throw in machine. I add baking soda to machine UNdisolved and it made a mess in the machine!

You could try hanging them outside in the sun for a few days. It will depend on how old your towels are too. I have several towels that are about 6 years old--they look to be in good shape and I like their smaller size for drying my hair--but because of their age they also smell musty upon their first use after washing and drying. I know they need to be replaced. It seems that there is not much I can do about that musty smell--vinegar doesn't seem to work to take it out permanently.

Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 12 - 20 drops of lemon essential oil , sprinkle over towels and let sit for 45 minutes , then wash as you normally do.

i usually wash musty or mildew-smelling towels with 1 cup of vinegar (no detergent) on regular cycle. Then I wash them again using detergent on the hottest cycle. Make sure that you dry them at the hottest setting on your dryer. This has helped me..with athletic clothing, as well. If this doesn’t work, then they are not worth saving unfortunatel. However, baking soda might work! Good luck.

You may need to clean your machine. If vinegar isn't working you can get a product in the laundry aisle specifically for cleaning the machine. When not in use leave the lid/door open and be sure to remove the towels as soon as the load is done. You can also use chlorine bleach in the load to help get rid of that musty smell.

I agree with adding baking soda but I also always rinse my towels twice and wash in hot water. Hope this helps.

We've started using the Lysol Laundry Odor Remover and Afresh Washing Machine Cleaner....our lingering odors have disappeared!
