We just moved in to a new house and I want to remodel & expand the kitchen. Not sure if it's possible since the kitchen area is very small space. Would like to add an Island to the kitchen. It hard to move around when there's more than on person in the kitchen. It still has the original counter top and sink from when the house was originally built 1950. Any ideas on what I can do?

Hi Kay, it really depends on the room you wish to expand into. Usually there is nothing stopping you in taking down a wall and expanding into another room. HOWEVER, the wall could be load bearing and may require a beam.

I would start there, figure out which space you are willing to sacrifice from for the kitchen size and then bring a contractor in to determine whether it is a load bearing wall. If it needs a beam it will definitely cost more.

Can you provide any pictures, or a drawing of the layout?
