Advice for Plank Ceiling on a Budget?

I want to add a plank ceiling in my dining room/kitchen/living room area. I’m looking for suggestions that are frugal but appear high end;) The most economical thing I have found is hardboard. I could have it ripped into planks at the store but I don’t know how easy it is to paint. Has anyone used it for a project like this or have a different solution that will be in my budget?

Maybe keep it as a whole n use a router to create a plank texture, then I'd use a good paint with primer in it!!?
And paint it before you put up the boards. Making a hobby horse table for this is very easy. It will save a lot of neck aches.
Its usually painted before its put up. And there have been some problems with some plank ceilings and moisture from lumber that is not kiln-dried. Its more expensive but worth it to not have problems. What is hardboard? chip board?
