I use shade cloth. White or light beige is the best to keep light on the plants. Dark color shade cloth is not as good for the plants as they need the light - not sun.

Soaker hoses attached to garden hoses on timers, add mulch around plants. Add shadecloth or suspend shadesails or similar cloth that will permit water through but reduces sun intensity. Water early morning to avoid evaporation. While watering in evening may be needed, it can also attract bugs, if done too late in evening. Healthy plants will better withstand Summer. Small quantity of Epsom salts dug around tomato plants helps reduce cracking. Add eggshells to surface area to kill slugs and crawling bugs. Remember to refertilize as needed, watering in, well.

When my husband mows the lawn he piles the grass clippings in piles, I use the clippings around my plants. It helps the ground from getting too dry out in hot weather, it also helps the water get to the roots faster. My flowers last longer by watering at the base of the plants.
