Outdoor curtains...DIY or ready made?

I would love some tips on making my own outdoor curtains. What type material? Grommets or loops? How to measure and what type rods can be used.

  • if you make them, look for washable indoor/outdoor fabric (if you want to go cheaper, look at painter's drop clothes.) You can want some breeze to be able to go through so loops or grommets will work. (that's more a matter of taste but loops would end up cheaper than buying the grommets). You can buy large dowel type rods at the lumber store and then use an outdoor poly to protect them from weather. Depending on the fullness you want, you would have to double the width of the open space you want to cover and add inches to the top and bottom for hemming. Have fun!

paint tarps may work...cheap and durable and can be painted/decorated. KMart has inexpensive curtains I am unsure if you can make them cheaper...What about heavy duty rope as hangers?

On line you can buy drop cloths in various colors and they have grommets in them.

Ladies!! Thank you! Those are awesome suggestions and tips! I never would of though drop cloths! Talk about super inexpensive! I'm not a big crafter but I bet I could even do this! I love this Hometalk site! Thanks again!

  • Tina, I have seen many people using the spray Scotchguard to turn outdoor pillows/curtains outdoor safe and water repellant. I tried this on some pillows I had and have left them outside and the water rolls right off. Maybe purchase normal curtains and spray them really good!
