If the area has very dense shade because of the tree of thin soil because of the tree's roots, you can try a ground cover plant. Vinca, pachysandra, and ajuga grow in most gardening zones. You don't have to mow them and they will bloom.

    Hi Donald,

There are a lot of perennial plants that will grow in the shade. Woodruff, Pachysandra, some Hostas, and more. The best way is for you to check with a local nursery because they know what will grow in your area. Each area is assigned a "Hardiness Zone" and plants will grow in some Hardiness Zones, but not others based on temperature & climate. So if you're in zone 4 and the plant grows in zone 8, it won't grow well in your zone. I hope that will help you find the perfect plant(s) for under your tree. You could also use garden decorations with mulch under the tree. You could create a beautiful area. Wishing you the best.

Hi Donald, I understand you all are going from it's hot to oh wow! Mulching around the tree will help retain water. Use containers with succulents (they don't require much water and come in a wide variety of colors and shapes) and add a small fountain to draw in the birds. Put out a bench or a couple of chairs and you have a lovely area.

Don't add soil around base of trunk. A barrier to hold in decorative white rocks, like landscaping edging is pretty.
