Hi, Ccc. What kind of tomatoes are you growing? Italian type tomatoes always have a skin that is a little thicker, that is why they stay good so long after picking them. I imagine the larger the tomato, the thicker the skins, also, to support the weight of the tomato. It is hard to say, perhaps even the weather could cause them to be thicker. I am sure they are just as good to eat, just make sure the knife you cut them with is very sharp so that you don't squish the tomato! Enjoy! I wish I had ripe tomatoes, Mine aren't even close yet, the weather was too weird this spring to get the plants in very early, so my fruits are still small. I lost a lot of flowers to storms and high heat, too. At least I know I will have some for making BLT's and other things!
