Can laminate furniture be refinished? Using what paint?

I have an ugly, black laminate TV stand. Can it be refinished in some way? I don't know what kind of paint would stick to it. Thank you!

Hi Mary, oh I love laminated furniture. It's the best (and cheapest) for a complete transformation. Clean with TSP and water. Dry well. Use a primer that will adhere to plastic. Then paint away. You can use spray paint, oil, alkyd, latex, textured paints, metallics-- whatever you want. Happy makeover.
  • Yes it can, Mary! Clean and lightly sand the stand. Paint with a good primer - Zinnser makes several, then paint it in your choice of colors. When it's dry, seal with a good topcoat.

Make sure it’s clean .... but, I’m finding that chalk paint covers and sticks to just about anything !

Hi Mary, I painted laminate cabinets recently. I was told to wash them well and when dry paint with a multi purpose primer. After this you can use whatever type of paint you want. You may want to seal it later as the paint may chip off if knocked. Good luck.

Hi Mary! Your TV stand can be refinished.....a light sanding, even though you won't even be able to tell you did it) and then a primer paint such as Kilz or Zinsser will give the piece some "tooth" so the paint of your choice will adhere. I did this with an old entertainment center and painted it the same color as my walls so it wasn't so noticeable. Mine did get scratched up a bit when I had to slide the TV into it, but I still liked it better than the faux wood I had to start with. Go for it!

Thank you, Janice! I'll give that a try!
