I had this window from a previous project, so the glass was already removed. Start, by removing the glass from the window and painting the window the color of your choice. I had previously used a wood stain on this. If you paint or stain your window, you'll need to make sure you let it dry completely.

Cut your chicken wire, chicken run or hardware cloth so that it overlaps the back of the window and staple to the frame.

Next, you'll want to get your cross stitch pattern. There are tons of free patterns online or you can draw your own.

Choose your yarn colors.

Cut two equal pieces of yarn and place diagonally over one of the squares.

You'll want two pieces going one way and two pieces overlapping so it creates an x. Tie the back yarn ends together in a double knot and cut the extra off.

These x's are used to create your "cross stitch" look.

That’s really cute but wouldn’t it be easier to do regular cross stitch on the wire screen rather than knotting and cutting the yarn at the back of the stitches. You just wouldn’t carry the yarn over open spaces.

The window screening is an excellent idea also! I bet that looks amazing!

This is not what our chicken wire looks like.. ours is 6 sided, where do you get your square chicken wire at?

Your wire is so much nicer than the chicken wire I find around here. This is so sweet and looks darling.
