Ideas for what to do about the tile in my bathroom?
I have a House built in 1958 with an original bathroom (pink!). The tile is billboard at the top - all the way around the bathroom. Has anyone run across this? Is the base built up under the tile, or is the wall built out to allow for depth?

Not visualizing this, can you post a photo?
I feel your pain.. mine was mint green. Neighbors was pink and wine.. Same era.. and also all the way around..If you aren't ready for a redo just yet, I'd go with grey and pink.. play down the pink and do a modern geometric soft grey on most everything else.. Lots of that color available now.. My husband passed before we got to redo it.. hated that 7 X 8 bathroom.....
Never heard of billboard? are you talking about the bullnose trim at the top of tile walls? https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&hs=vUW&tbm=isch&q=pictures+of+types+of+50s+tile+edging+in+bathroom&chips=q:pictures+of+types+of+50s+tile+edging+in+bathroom,online_chips:pink&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiM2ezXupbcAhV9FzQIHV6sBy4Q4lYILSgF&biw=1473&bih=701&dpr=0.9

I remember having one as a kid, with pink cherries on the wall and curtains
I’m wondering if by billboard, you mean an inset all around the tiling in the room as a decorative feature? Generally small features one might have for a built in, such as a toilet tissue holder, are built in between the studs in the wall. I can only imagine that if you have such a feature all around your bathroom, there must have been additions made to the studs, i.e. the wall was built out above and below the feature, to accommodate for this. I haven’t personally come across that feature, but I do have some knowledge of construction. I hope this is of some value.
Spellchecker got me! It's bullnosed around the top. The drywall comes down and then the tile looks to be either about a half inch thick (rounded at the top) or the wall was built out a half inch, or (God forbid) there's a thick amount of cement behind it. I'd hate to get into a mess that I can't fix!
Wow! I was afraid of that! It sounds awful - and expensive. It's just that I'm on a slab, and I live in Ohio, and the bathroom is ten degrees colder than the rest of the house, with all that tile. And it's pink, gray, and burgundy! Thank you so much for letting me know what I'd be getting into.
