Hi Tricia, instead of changing the cabinets, how about adding more lighting? Kitchens seem to never have enough or the wrong kind. Add under the cabinet lighting. There are even new battery operated ones with remote controls. Add to or get new brighter lightbulbs. I think you'll find you love your kitchen and cabinets again once you can see the light! (pardon the pun...)
Paint them - but that is big job. I always suggest to people to paint the walls in the kitchen a bright or light color before tackling the huge job of painting cabinets. You can replace the knobs and pulls for an instant update too, add a bright backsplash and new lighting in the room.
I painted my cabinets white. Take cabinet doors and drawer fronts off and remove hinges (number them for easy replacement - put a tiny number inside the cabinet or drawer and a matching number on backside of door.) That makes it easier to replace the right door to right cabinet. Then clean well. Then I used liquid sandpaper and then primed and painted. Bought new knobs and drawer pulls. Easy and cheap. I love mine.
