I don't know any secrets but these are my husband's favorite flowers and he has planted them in our small Maine garden on the south side and the west side of our house. He does stake them. Watch out for bugs. . .they look like lady bugs
I've had great luck with oriental lilies by putting them in super sunny location with well drained soil ( they're in a garden that's on a bit of a hill). Other than that, I haven't touched them and they are thriving. Good luck!
