Hello Nancy, I think sedum would be a wonderful plant for you to consider. It is effortless groundcover that will spead and needs very little care or attention.
I am in zone seven and use them as a groundcover sort of a (weed free) green mulch, and I also use it in planters as the leaves and textures can be interesting.
