What to do with cabinets and countertops in a rental unit

Countertops can be painted too, just seal well with a clear sealer that is food safe. Probably at least 3 coats.

You might be able to find paint for free at a Habitat for Humanity store or buy inexpensively from "oops" paint at any store that sells paint.

I've gotten paint as low as $3.50 per gallon at Home Depot that was in their markdown paint area. You got this! Take your time and learn as you go and you'll be amazed at what can be accomplished if you're determined.

this is where i'd call around.. i lived in 1 area that had the county dump...the hazardous materials where stored in a shed, that is paint, paint thinners, varnishes . etc. it was free for the taking. then there is "oops" paint, paint hat has been miss colored. those are also discounted- steeply... although some stores won't sell it, you have to ask if they will or won't. milk paint, chalk paint....i wouldn't use them on the cabinets...the issue is getting the stuff off if you ever want to change the look.

there is a kit for counter tops i think its a rustoleum product.

You might also consider looking on Craigslist or checking your local Habitat ReStore for inexpensive raw materials like wood or granite that could be used to create an interesting new counter top.
