How can I give old carved wooden beams a farmhouse facelift?

Tearing these down would be my first choice, but I know that removing two of the beams will result in drywall damage (drywalling & painting is not a project I want to take on right now!). Is there a way to build a simple box/casing to install on the outside of the beams? Any advice and ideas will be GREATLY appreciated!

Yes you can box them in with lumber or MDF. But I think that will be more work than removing it and just adding a bit of drywall, tape and mud.

Maybe just adding lattice work panels into the opening between door and room and painting it all one color. It will still allow light to the doorway. A few country pictures hung on the room side of lattice might work as well. Your could go with white or go rustic.
