How to Get Patina Perfection on Your Piece!

Amy from Aj's Vintage Designs was playing around with the Patina products from Dixie Belle and loved how it turned out so she decided to do a similar look on this old Bombay Chest.

The first step was to clean, clean, clean! She sprayed her piece down with Dixie Belle White Lightning, wiped it clean and then went over it with a damp cloth to remove any leftover cleaning residue.

Next step was to give it the “dipped” look. Amy painted the bottom in Dixie Belle’s Coffee Bean, which is a rich dark brown. She started at the bottom and pulled her brush upwards, giving it a “feathered" look. She did 2 coats of Coffee Bean.

Then Amy used Dixie Belle’s Dried Sage, a very khaki looking color with a hint of green undertones. She started with brush strokes at the top and brush towards the bottom allowing the brush to leave the same jagged edge at the end of her brush stroke.

Now the fun really begins. She used Dixie Belle’s Bronze Patina Paint in an up/down motion to blend the Dried Sage and Coffee Bean’s edges together.

Once the first coat of bronze patina was dry, she applied the second coat. Make sure you have your activation spray (Green or Blue) ready, along with any other materials you will need (i.e. sponge, paper towels, brush, baby wipes). The Blue or Green Spray will need to be applied to the bronze patina paint while it is WET, so you have to move quickly and work in small sections.

For this project, Amy applied the Blue Spray with a sea sponge for a heavy patina look. She poured the spray into a bowl and then dabbed it onto the wet Bronze Patina Paint.

We hope you enjoyed this tutorial! She was glad she took pictures while she worked on this piece so she could share it with you.
