How do you get a musty smell out of washcloths?

My hubby uses liquid shower gel.

I have tried soaking in vinegar or bleach or even icy lean. Use softener sheets. When dry they still have a musty odor.

There are numerous things you can do...

Add a cup of vinegar or a cup of baking soda to the wash to combat odors. Consider using a clothesline to dry your clothes outside to get a fresh outdoors scent. Use half a cup of pine scented cleaner in the washer (the pine smell will be eliminated after a cycle in the dryer). Put musty, dry clothing in the freezer.

Barb, personallyI use Lysol. I keep a bottle on the top shelf of the laundry room. I don't use it often but when I do it's a lifesaver.

My husband and son both have an 'unusual odor' in their clothes and the bed sheets (and pillow case especially). It is not bad--just not overly pleasant. I tried just about everything. Finally, I found a product at the local Dollar Tree store (everything a dollar). It is called 'Awesome'.

Boy--what a difference. My husband is a nurse and Awesome removes every stain (so far) from his uniforms (all white). Unbelieveable--BUT the best thing is that off smell. I run their clothes and bed clothes through a hot wash with Awesome, 1 cup lemon juice, and 1 c baking soda. Then I hang them out in the sunshine. What a difference. PLUS my sheets are cleaner. Then I threw a scoop of 'Oxyclean' in the hot water before adding the clothes and sheets--WOW--my sheets are like new-cleaner and brighter.

A little bit of work, but OH so worth it. God bless, Charlene

Csh, who'd have thought something from the Dollar Tree would come so highly recommended! Thanks for the great idea. I have hard rusty water and the Trump-orange shower curtains to prove it. I'm going to try Awesome and Oxyclean.

Do you put all 4 extras - lemon juice, Awesome, Oxyclean, and baking soda - altogether in one load? I don't have the water heater turned up very high (just above the Vacation level) to try to save money. Do you think that would make these less effective cleaners? Thanks!

Give him a clean washcloth every day. It is that the washcloth is not drying out. When you remove his used one just rinse it out in clear water and allow to dry before putting in wash.

Try changing his shower gel. There may be a reaction to your water so try something new.

Ask him to rinse an extra time and then toss the used linens in the laundry asap. Also, persuade him to try a different brand and scent. Maybe it's the musky/forest scent you're reacting to.

I could always tell when my ex had been with a smoker. I could usually tell him the brand smoked, too. I'd have to ask him to even change down to his undershirt, I was that sensitive to the odor. Just tell him you have a high class nose. ;)

  • Have you tried baking soda on the wash? I use a LARGE scoop full to particularly smelly loads.

The washcloths are not drying out. Wash in a light bleach solution if the color will tolerate - hang dry in the sun.
