How can we clean up the weeds in the rose beds and keep them out?

Bed is bordered in railroad ties. Currently there is no mulch but lots of weeds. We will be moving into this property next week and there are other Rose and azalea beds to maintain, also. Need to make it look like it wasn't deserted and overlooked!

Hi Jemi, first congrats on the new place! Dig and pull out as many as you can before using a weed killer that is safe around ornamental plants. Then lay down a couple of layers of newspaper and top with mulch. You can also use garden fabric, but if you have paper you've packed dishes, etc. in use that. Put down a good 2 inch layer or mulch. What an adorable name! Jemi, weeds will be with us always, but you can eliminate them in your flowerbeds through diligence and labor. Pull all the largest weeds, or dig them out by the roots if you can. Spray a good poison like WeedBGone over all the area you will not be planting. Cover the spaces with black plastic. Then fill the area with rocks or pebbles. You need enough coverage so sunlight can’t get through the rocks, even as they shift. You can also use several inches of mulch, but you risk weed seeds being in the mulch. You still have to weed right around the edges of the plants and trees you want to keep, but it will be much easier than trying to weed all the beds constantly. Be vigilant and best wishes, Jemi! ☺️
Weeds grow no matter the weather.If you use weed killer, be careful not to get on plants. Some are toxic and will kill your plants.
Experts advise Not to keep railroad ties. They are coated with tar and chemicals that are not healthy for the plants or you.
same problem everywhere! our current remedy is to pull, pull, pull. Once you have all of them out, as far as you can see, mulch like you never thought you would. we have at least 4" if not more and the weeds are coming back, but in small single plants. easy enough to take care of once a week.
